character
NAME: Simon
STAGE NAME: The Digger
TATTOO LOCATION: See where Sense of Wonder Simon has the tattoo? Thar.
AGE: 16
SERIES: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
CANON-POINT: A year after defeating Lordgenome.

HISTORY: A(n) wiki? Well... that's not... you know...

PERSONALITY: One of the first things you have to know about Simon, is that he never gives up on anything, and that his determination, when he feels like he's doing the right thing, knows no bounds. When people are depending on him, he always comes through. Even if the world is against him, Simon the Digger doesn't give up and he doesn't back down. When faced with opposition, he fights to the last breath to protect his friends and comrades.

Simon's got extreme moral obligations to himself—if he fails to do what he feels is right, it takes a heavy toll on him, whether it's visible or not. His biggest insecurity can lead to his greatest strength, though—after failure, Simon comes back with something to prove.

While loyal and generally kind, if prompted, mostly if he's depressed or afraid, Simon can be kind of an ass. This could mean reminding someone of something that they'd rather not be reminded of, or standing up against someone who he really shouldn't be standing up against. This is where he gets in trouble. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

On an unrelated note, going back a bit, Simon's childhood wasn't very stable, causing his terrible problem with security. When he was seven, he lost his parents in a cave in—he watched them crushed before his eyes, and could do nothing to help them. After that, he spent his time digging for the chief and raising himself. He had almost no friends, no one to rely on, except for Kamina—the biggest social outcast ever. Every time another cave-in would happen, Simon's life was shattered in a new way, be it through losing another member of the village or destroying his latest work on a tunnel system. The villagers of Jiha looked down on Simon as creepy, smelly and useless except for digging. This is part of the reason he's so unused to being complimented—it never happened, before. And it's probably the reason he's so nervous and embarrassed around Nia—he's never felt this way about anyone before (despite the brief stint of liking Yoko), and he doesn't know what to do about it.

That said, Simon feels with incredible power. When he's sad, he's heart-wrenchingly depressed, when he's happy he's at the top of the world. His anger is pure fury and his embarrassment is red-faced, make-self-tiny bashful. When he's scared, he's pushed to tears and when he's excited he's unstoppable. Simon is very pure about his feelings, too. There's no mixed messages. If Simon is angry with you, you know it. And if Simon loves you, there will never be a doubt in the world.

Simon has constantly been pushed into things he doesn't feel ready for by Kamina—starting with silly “break through the ceiling” plans, evolving to piloting Lagann, and eventually, being made leader of the Dai-Gurren-dan.

His uncertainty about these jobs lead him to believe that any and every problem occurring with his friends is his fault, despite the actual circumstances. Tying into his determination, Simon's personal values are part of this—his failure to do the right thing, no matter the reason—even if there was no chance of doing said thing—drives another nail into the board of uncertainty. It's honestly his biggest weakness, and he has problems recognizing it, thinking he's right to be uncertain, as he's does “so much wrong.”

That is part of what makes Simon a good leader, at least in the beginning. He's humble enough to check himself. He can admit what he's done wrong, and try to fix it. He cares about the people who depend on him with his whole heart, and their needs come before him. He's a wonderful balance of creativity, passion, logic, humility, trust and pride. He thinks around things in ways no one else does, and has the common sense to go to his friends if he can't figure something out. He will eventually grow into laziness, but that's a very sad part of the story DX.

The two sides of his personality—determination and uncertainty—are two very different qualities. I do not doubt that this is the reason Simon's so emotionally unstable. He doesn't often act like it, but Simon's just a kid, torn up inside by what's right and what's easy. He is this way long into his life... but he always chooses what he believes is right.

POWERS/ABILITIES: His only power is "Spiral Energy." With this, he has the ability to bend space, time and reality to his will. He has yet to master it, so it would only react to extreme fear and anger. It's fueled by his will to live and evolve.

He's also got a really knack for digging and can pick things up very easily, so long as they don't require him to be particularly skillful. He learned to pilot a robot in minutes without instruction, after all. Though this can also be attributed to the fact he's great at guessing 8Db

Simon's also got the lovely strength of being able to really motivate people. It's something he grows into, but if he feels that there is some kind of injustice, Simon has bamf streak going on.

ACT SUGGESTIONS: I read on the FAQ that you could not have an act and rather work behind the scenes. Simon would probably be better behind the scenes. He can be clumsy when he's anxious and he's not very good at leading anything but armies |D

samples
The following samples should take place in the Circus's setting. They can be from any point of time in the character's stay, but they must take place in the "concept" of the Circus.

FIRST-PERSON: [It isn't every day you see a molepig on a tightrope. But it is today. You might also see a terribly vertically challenged boy on the platform, reaching out for the tiny creature, though his reach is very short.]

Boota--Boota, you have to come back here. C'mon, you're going to get hurt. [The molepig dances away down the line. Simon reaches out a little further.] Boota, we have to get ready--[His reach is now precariously far out.] C'mon, we have a job to do. We're late already, we need to get ba--[And, of course, Simon slips from the platform, boots caught on the wire, hanging upside down.

It takes him a few moments, and then--He stretches his arms toward the wire, flails a bit, falls short.]
U-um--help?! Please?

[I SUCK AT SAMPLES. HERE HAVE A MORE NATURAL SOUNDING VOICE: THIS POST HYAH]

THIRD-PERSON: He was absolutely no good at any kind of performance. His voice was small, as was his body, and he didn't call much much attention with his movement--ducking out of any spotlight and avoiding oh so badly the expectant gaze of others. Simon the Digger was brave on the battle field, fearless when facing death itself, capable when piloting a Ganmen, this much was doubtless. But if you put juggling balls, throwing knives, flame-lit clubs in the boy's hands, he fumbled, sending things crashing down on his feet, bouncing off walls and nearly setting anything in their path on fire. He was terrible at controlling any sort of animals--he couldn't even keep Boota in line! He couldn't even attempt gymnastics... he was very good at falling though! That--that in itself was very clear, as every time he tried to do anything remotely acrobatic, he ended in a wonderful accidental somersault. He could not write and was clumsy with any kind of brush, so sets were out of the question. He couldn't weave a story, his tongue stumbled on any words longer than two syllables. Acting? Acting was out of the question. He couldn't lie about what he had for breakfast that morning, let alone act.

In fact, this whole thing was uncanny. Simon did not seem to have any talents outside of battle and digging--neither of which was very useful in a circus ring.

... He gave a small grimace, sitting amongst the different acts he tried--this was going to be a very very difficult time.

ANY QUESTIONS?: Canon, yes?

PERSONALITY: Simon's personality is something that changes and evolves greatly throughout the series. In the course of only a few months, he turns from a small coward who believes he can't do anything, to a battle-hardened warrior with a heart bigger than his body ever could be.

If there's one thing that sets Simon apart, it's the pure love he has for those close to him. He'd do anything for the people he loves and this

Character
Name: Simon
Series: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Gurren Gakuenhen
Timeline:
Canon Resource Links: Unless you want me to link you to the manga, and you feel like reading the whole thing, I do not have a link. THEREFORE. TEAL DEER.

Gurren Gakuenhen contains all a lot of the same characters as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, but they lost a level in badass. The story basically goes: Simon is a high school student attending Dai-Gurren High, orphaned at a very young age (possibly in the fireearthquakeflood that destroyed his home), who just wishes for an incredibly normal life. Unfortunately, much like TTGL Simon, life, the universe and everything hates him. I mean this without exaggeration.

When he was a baby at the zoo with his parents, he was kidnapped by monkeys. When he was in preschool, he had problems with wetting himself so he was called “Simon the Pants Pee-er.” When he was in elementary school, after his parents died, he ran away from home and ended up on a tuna fishing boat with his bro, Kamina. His house was demolished by an earthquake, burnt by a fire and then washed away in a flood.

Simon's life was at least... vaguely normal until one day, as he is lamenting his luck, a GIRL FLIES DOWN A SET OF STAIRS AT HIM. Onto his face. No, seriously. Onto his face. (Whether this is lucky or not is up to you.) It seems the girl knows nothing about anything, having lived a very sheltered life under her father, who happens to be the headmaster of the prestigious Teppelin High. She is very sweet and naive and causes a great deal of painful misunderstandings. All of which backfire on Simon.

Like the time she decides she is going to start living with him, because she thinks they're married. Yeah, just like that.

High school shenanigans happen, they go to the beach, etc etc. Life is hectic, but fun, and Simon hasn't been this happy in ever.

Until one day, Nia disappears. Simon finds her on the roof of Dai-Gurren High, acting totally batshit insane. Turns out that Nia was so secluded as a child that she came up with an alternate self to keep her company. Yes, Nia has multiple personality disorder. But alternate!Nia wants to make sure that Simon is good enough for normal!Nia and sets up... traps... all over the school... that Simon must face before meeting with her and proving that he's worth it.

Which he very well does. And a hectic life returns...

And no one died or got turned into Anti-Spiral messengers. The end.

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality: If there is one thing to be said for Simon--any Simon, Gurren Lagann, Gurren Gakuenhen, Movieverse, Mangaverse--it is that the boy never, ever gives up.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Try to cover the good points of what they can do, their life skills (not necessarily powers, but things they're just good at). Go into their biggest fears and what they just can’t do.

Pokemon
Starter: What starter do you want your character to have? You may use any pokemon, except for legendaries and evolved forms, and only the first two generations (up to Johto) of pokemon are allowed. As the game progresses, the other generation pokemon may be allowed, but as of now they are not. Alternatively, if you would like a starter Pikachu using the Ash-Ketchum-Syndrome, please explain your reasoning here.

Password: This is where you'll put the passwords from the Rules and the F.A.Q. There are two words, to assure you've read both.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample: Eight sentences is the minimum.

Third Person Sample: The minimum is 300 words. Please note that what we are looking for is an inner working into the character’s thoughts and actions, and not something that could be taken as a fanfic. You may use other characters to bounce your characters actions off of, but everything should still be from their point of view.

[A video.

Simon, staring out at the sky, taken from a distance. It's very late at night--stars scattered across the way. He seems to be talking, to nothing. Once in a while, he tugs at his sleeve, or gestures to the Sandshrew sitting on his shoulder (after which he shakes his head, expression filled with loss). He laughs, sheepishly into his hand, his shoulders shaking with it.

And then he falls to his knees, clenching his hands on his lap. He's still got a smile on his face, and after a few moments, his fingers go to his red arm band... He continues to talk, but now his words might seem harsher, even more animated, he shakes his head. He picks up a handful of snow, pressing it between his bare fingers, and then holds it as if showing it to someone else.

And his fingers scramble through what's left of the snow, searching for something beneath it. He's greeted with a layer of ice, and he practically rips the drill from around his neck, digging with it. He doesn't relax until there's dirt beneath his fingers, though they're red--they don't bleed anymore; they're far too callused.

After a few seconds of simply staring at the dirt, thankful he can see it again, Simon heaves a sigh. A smile and shake of the head later, he stands, and begins to walk toward the Pokemon Center. He looks over his shoulder, at the moon, and raises a hand in a wave goodbye. If someone was good at reading lips, they'd have a clear shot at this one:

"Later, Aniki."]

[video cuts in halfway through Simon talking, seemingly to his Magikarp, Fish. Simon's still not looking so hot from his cold (haha i made a pun), and is in a bed, but still, he's having a good deal of fun.

... Though who knows if Fish really understands what's going on. He stares, blankly at Simon, once in a while uttering a Karp...]
--niki and me and everyone was trapped, though! And everyone was starting to panic! We knew if we didn't find a tunnel soon, we were going to starve to death, or be crushed at the next earthquake.

But Aniki--Aniki just kept his cool! Everybody else was giving up but Aniki--he never, ever gave up! Not on anybody or anything--not even somebody like me! But he wasn't always loud, either! Aniki... Aniki was the nicest bro ever...

When there was a cave-in, I was scared... I wanted to hide-- But Aniki wouldn't go. He just stood there, and made sure I didn't get hit by anything, and yelled that we would always be afraid if we didn't head for the surface!

It's thanks to him, that I could do anything at all... Aniki wouldn't--

[And he stops, because Fish is glowing. And in a flash, the useless little magikarp becomes a giant gayrados (misspelling intentional). Simon's so badly startled that he almost falls off-- and the video cuts at Simon gaping at the newly, aptly-named A Lot Bigger Fish.]

[Simon is in the violet pokemon center, wrapped up in about six blankets, shivering and red faced. He coughs a few times before rolling onto his side.]

I hate cold... I wonder if manly spirit could [SNIFF] make cold go away...

[Simon's somewhere between WONDERMENT and HORROR as he posts this video post. What's he staring at?

Snow.

Mother. Fucking. Snow.

In a jacket with no shirt, a pair of shorts and a pair of boots. Oh my god he's cold.]

W-what--What is this stuff?! It's freezing!

Simon the Digger
[You know what you get to see? You get to see a blue-haired boy devouring a mountain of food that looks... frankly, inedible. His cheeks are bulging with food. At his side is his trusty Sandshrew, eating his part as well--FOR ONCE, HE'S NOT NIBBLING ON SIMON'S POKEGEAR.

This feed goes on for a long time, Simon having no idea that he's being recorded.

Finally, he throws his head back, and sighs.]

... That was the best ever.

[... Simon's standing, in just a pair of shorts, on Route 30. His Sandshrew is wrapped around his shoulder very comfortably.

He's holding up what looks like green fabric... He pauses a moment to take a breath, before going absolutely red.

It's a Picknicker dress. He stumbles over his words, trying to get something past his huge embarrassment, before:]

W-why'd I get a dress?!?!

[... blame Double K]
